Every 26 January we celebrate World Environmental Education Day. The celebration dates back to 1975, the year in which the International Environmental Education Workshop was held in Belgrade. The event was attended by experts from over 70 countries in the framework of the United Nations Programmes. The Belgrade Charter was published the same year. It contained several goals such as to “develop a world population that is aware of, and concerned about, the environment and its associated problems, and which has the knowledge, skills, attitudes, motivations, and commitment to work individually and collectively toward solutions of current problems and the prevention of new ones”. In Spain, the CENEAM or National Centre for Environmental Education has been increasing community awareness of our responsibility towards the environment since 1987.
